My Opinion: There are many software options for smart phones I would recommend more - as they have great mobility and are anyhow with you, the budget needed will be 10-50$ in that case... If you want a dedicated device go for Tom Tom. Simple, clean, got features if you are a whiz. More suitable for cars than walking. RT reports depend on country of usage.

My Opinion: as Sharon mentioned using a software on your phone will be better then a dedicated device. with the mobile version you can easily upgrade and buy the maps you need for the country you are at. also many companies like Samsung offer free GPS options for the country you buy the phone at.
